Are Ants Pests?

Some species of ants are deemed pests due to their territorial nature, conflicting with our living spaces, and their appetite for resources we need. Here are a few examples:

  • Leafcutting ants, primarily found in the American tropics, compete with us for crop plants.
  • Fire ants colonize damp grasslands, which includes our lawns, with alarming ease.
  • Carpenter ants inhabit damp or rotting wood, viewing the lumber in houses as fair game.

Many opportunistic ant species can overrun kitchens, pantries, and pet food areas in search of food.

Understanding Ant Anatomy

Shape, Size & Colour

The body of an ant is clearly divided into three sections: the head, the thorax, and the abdomen. They usually come in dark or earth tones, with species ranging in colours from black to various shades of earth-tone reds, pale tans, and basic browns.

The Roles of Male and Female Ants

Flying male and female ants swarm and mate in the late spring to early summer. After this event, the female ant starts a new colony and becomes a queen. While both the male and female ants shed their wings after mating, only the female survives significantly longer.

Female ants typically take on one of two roles:

  • Reproductive Female/New Queen: She is responsible for mating and expanding the colony.
  • Worker Ant: This female ant takes on the job of foraging and caring for eggs.

Male ants serve the sole purpose of mating with a reproductive female.

The Life of Immature Ants

Ant larvae are white and grub-like. They don’t move much on their own, and their large, dark stomachs are often visible through their cuticles. Ant pupae resemble white adult ants, with their legs and antennae pressed close to their bodies.

Ant Food Sources & Habitats

Most ants consume a diet of small insects (both dead and alive), nectar, or honeydew. They require a balance of carbohydrates and protein to support the queen in egg production and for the larvae to grow. While most ant species live in the soil, some also live in wood (like carpenter ants) or in cavities within plants.

Ant Predators

Frog

Ants face threats from a variety of predators, including reptiles, amphibians, spiders, other insects, bats, birds, and even humans.

Fascinating Ant Behaviours

As social insects, ants live in colonies comprising one or more queens and many workers. Ants display many behaviors that remind us of human society. They communicate with each other to share food locations and send alarms when threats are detected.

Common Ants in Canada

Canada is home to several unique ant species, each with distinctive characteristics. Let’s examine some of these species.

Carpenter Ants

Carpenter ants are native to Canada and are among the largest of ant species, growing up to 2 cm in size. They prefer residing in moist wood and building materials. While they don’t consume wood, they tunnel through it, causing potential damage to structures.

The 2 most common species of carpenter ants in Canada are:

  1. Modoc: These carpenter ants are all black (their legs may have a rusty red colour), and they only have one queen in their parent nest.
  2. Vicinus: These carpenter ants have a black head, a rusty red thorax (mid-section), and a black abdomen (tail section), and they have multiple queens in a parent nest.

Pavement Ants

These reddish-brown ants are usually found along pavement, but they can infiltrate other areas as well. They pose minimal threat to structural damage but can still be a nuisance.

Odorous House Ants

Odorous house ants are dark red or black and emit a distinctive rotten coconut smell. They construct their nests outdoors but will enter homes if given a chance, making them a challenging pest to control due to their polymorphic behaviors.

Thatcher Ants

Thatcher ants are sizable and come in a mix of red and black colours. They are known for creating massive mounds from small sticks, grass stems, leaves, and pine or fir needles.
